SPOT is Evolving

August 30, 2025

SPOT is evolving. Building on the convention introduced with SPOT-CE (SPOT-Card Edge), the original SPOT is now designated SPOT-MB (SPOT-Mid-Board) – highlighting its application and where it sits on the PCB.

Moog’s innovative engineering team has given SPOT-MB a key upgrade. SPOT-MB now has a spring-loaded CLAMP that securely holds the MT ferrule. The CLAMP allows the MT ferrule to be separable, not permanently pigtailed to SPOT-MB.  No tools are required to secure the CLAMP, making installation quick and simple. To further ensure proper connection between the MT ferrules, SPOT-MB features a Ferrule Detection Sensor, that confirms proper alignment.

SPOT-MB maintains its original footprint, at just one-third the length and weight of a standard QSFP. That means lighter boards, more I/O density, and less thermal load without redesigning the PCB layout. Only one industry standard QSFP electrical connector is required to connect SPOT-MB and SPOT-CE to the PCB. SPOT-MB and SPOT-CE are available at 1, 10, and 40 Gbps with 100 Gbps in development..

At MOSA 2025, The SPOT product platform won a “Best in Show” award, in the Power Electronics category, earning attention from the industry.
